If you missed pictures of the new apartment, you can see them here. We love the neighborhood and the new place. It is full of charm, quiet, and lots of light.

In other news, I just got a job as a barista at Starbucks. The job will help pay for grad school (which I have now applied for!) and it's something I won't have to quit once school starts. I was looking for something nearby with flexible hours. I have heard Starbucks is a great company to work for, and I love being around people and serving food and drink. I think I'm going to really like it.MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-32263749080319885822010-12-29T12:43:00.000-08:002010-12-29T12:46:27.455-08:002010 Newsletter
Dear Family and Friends,

In the first week of January, we put everything we owned into a little trailer and drove across the country to Massachusetts. It was a scary trip because we didn’t have jobs lined up or a place to live, and we were driving in the middle of a snow storm, but once we arrived in Boston things started working out for us and we have loved our new home.

He has also been working on a book.

Yesterday Daniel and I spent the day in the cape meeting with our florist and our wedding planner finalizing plans. We can't wait to see everyone!!!

A lot of people have been asking us about our plans for Saturday, the day before the wedding. Yesterday we explored a few beaches, and we decided it would be great to invite anyone who'd like to see us on Saturday to join us in the evening to watch the sunset at Old Silver Beach in North Falmouth (about 25 minutes from Sandwich). This is a west-facing beach, so the sun sets over the water. We'll be getting there around 7:30, and the sun sets around 8:30. There are no parking fees at the beach after 5 pm. Of course, if the weather is bad we'll have a back up plan.

A sidenote: we went to Craigsville Beach on the south shore of the cape yesterday as well. This is one of the more popular cape beaches because the water is warm and there are steady waves. But the water is also kind of mucky full of broken shells, so if you're looking for clear water and no crowds, steer clear of this beach! There are also other warm water beaches.

See you all soon!Michaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14349748492834306114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-78360554842926276052010-06-04T11:29:00.000-07:002010-07-17T08:40:15.837-07:00What to Wear
A few have asked about appropriate dress, so I thought it'd be good to update the blog. If you're wondering what to wear to the wedding, it is a formal event, so Sunday best is appropriate.

Since the dinner is in the evening and is indoors and the ceremony is in the morning in the garden, the dinner is slightly more formal than the ceremony. It would certainly be appropriate to wear the same outfit to both the ceremony and the reception (I think most are), but you don't have to. It would also be appropriate to have different day-time and evening formal looks. The grooms and groomsmen will be in tuxedos, but we do not expect our guests to wear tuxedos or extravagant dresses.

Go ahead and be creative--We don't want anyone stressing about a dress code. We just want you to feel comfortable and to have a good time.
MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-67824744231601562072010-06-03T12:37:00.000-07:002010-06-03T12:41:15.469-07:00Sunday Activity Ideas<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Because our ceremony is in the morning and the reception is in the evening, there's about 6 hours of free time during the day. We're hoping everyone breaks up into smaller groups and finds things to do that they like. There are several options from beaches and wildlife preserves to shopping and art galleries. Here are a few ideas:
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<blockquote style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">1. Walking Trails. If you want to walk around the Cape's beautiful scenery, I recommend looking at the Boardwalk Beach in Sandwich or Talbot's Point in East Sandwich. You could even rent a bicycle at ECO Tourz and ride around the town or the many bike trails. Sandy Neck Beach between Sandwich and Barnstable has nice trails through exotic looking dunes and is dog friendly. There are also gardens you can enjoy at the Sandwich Heritage Museum & Gardens nearby.

2. Swimming. If you want to swim, we recommend leaving Sandwich because the water in Sandwich is cold. Old Silver Beach in Falmouth is about 28 minutes away and has warm water, lifeguards, facilities, and concessions. Skaket Beach is about 38 minutes away in Orleans and is also warm and very shallow. You can walk out into the sea for a mile.

3. Historical Sites/Museums. There are several historical sites to visit like the Dexter Grist Mill and several restored houses. You may also want to visit the Sandwich Glass Museum or the Heritage Museum which both have local art and history. The Heritage Museum and Gardens has a functioning, antique carousel and a maze. If you have kids, they may like the Zooquarium in Yarmouth.

4. Shopping. If you want to bring home a souvenir or if you just like window shopping, you may want to try Lemon Tree Village in Brewster. It's about 30 minutes away and they have home decor stores, art and local craft shops, a pottery shop/studio, a specialty toy store, and an old fashioned sweet shop. There are also antique stores lining route 6A up and down the cape, and you can find a bunch of local art galleries in Falmouth.

5. Festivals. There is an art festival 20 minutes away in Barnstable called Art in the Village. There is also a dog festival in Falmouth called Hounds at Highfield from 11:30-4. There is a portuguese festival in Provincetown, but that is a good hour + away.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">For more ideas, visit www.sandwichchamber.com and download the 2009 Sandwich guidebook. We hope you have a great time out here in the cape!
MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-42694338707137485492010-03-23T06:57:00.000-07:002010-05-08T15:37:39.931-07:00Spin Around in your Highest Heels

Someone asked me about wedding colors the other day. We want our photos to be timeless and versatile, and so we decided to use black, cream, and gray as our colors. Of course, that probably doesn't matter to you, but hey, now you know.

One of the nice things about our wedding is that we don't have a bride :) That means there are no bridesmaid dresses strategically designed to look bad on every body type so no one looks better than the bride. We want our groomsmaids and groomsmen to wear whatever dress they want to flatter their figures (just kidding, the groomsmen will wear tuxedos, not dresses--hehehe).

We're so excited for the wedding and can't wait to see you there!MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-11986057985015469722010-02-28T08:11:00.000-08:002010-02-28T08:23:56.461-08:00And From the Ballroom Floor, We are in Celebration

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Michael was able to visit Cape Cod last summer, around the same time we're getting married, which has given us an idea about what to expect. I thought I'd share some of his pictures so you could get a better picture in your head. It is very green that time of year. We're going to exchange our marriage vows in the garden. It's a small space, but it will be intimate and beautiful, surrounded by flowers. The ceremony will be in the morning at 10:30, and won't last too long.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Either before the ceremony or right after it, we will take some pictures at the beach with the wedding party. Either way, I suspect it will be the place to be after the ceremony. It's a beautiful beach accessed by a long boardwalk that extends over a salt marsh. Michael's favorite Cape Cod Beach, Skaket Beach, is also only 40 minutes away.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">This time is really yours to take a nap, find a restaurant in town, play a round of golf, or do whatever you'd like to do for a few hours. There's enough time to go to Boston or to Provincetown at the tip of the cape. We'll be posting ideas every so often on the blog, and we will probably make sure there are car pool groups going to the best places.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">That evening at 6:30 we'll all meet back at the Dan'l Webster Inn. We've reserved the conservatory for a full course, sit-down dinner. You will have your choice of entrees:
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
Chicken Oscar - boneless breast, sautéed, topped with lobster, spinach and béarnaise sauce
or
Grilled Swordfish Tuscano - with olives, garlic, basil, artichoke hearts, and tomatoes

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">There will also be a vegetarian option, and the kitchen is very accommodating, so please let us know if you have dietary needs/requests.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Dinner will be part of a reception with music, cake, and lots of dancing! We are so excited, and we want everyone to have a good time.

We look forward to seeing you all in June!
MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-1650338460232097072010-02-22T05:54:00.000-08:002010-04-14T14:11:33.357-07:00Alive in Boston
We've started mailing out our invitations (thanks mom!) and the countdown is on! We're still 4 months away from the wedding, but we wanted to make sure that you have time to book flights and hotels in advance. We look forward to getting your RSVPs; we're planning a formal ceremony and a formal closed dinner and reception. We hope that you'll be able to come!

If you're visiting our blog for the first time, you can see links to hotels and bed & breakfasts in the area. Also, if you don't mind the drive, then Boston is only an hour away from Cape Cod for those who might prefer staying in the city.

In other news, I have a job! Next week I start work as an editorial assistant for UpToDate, an online medical database for physicians and patients. I'm am beyond excited about this! My goal was to find an editorial position by June, and I ended up getting one of the first jobs I applied for. It's been a huge relief for us as well; we moved out to Boston with enough money to survive for a couple months - maybe not the most prudent decision in the middle of a recession - but things have worked out and we are going to survive.

Daniel has been painting and writing like crazy this week. He's applied for several residencies in New England and is also looking for jurried shows to enter. He'll probably be working with the census in a few weeks as well.

If you have any questions for us about the wedding or need help/ideas in planning your trip to Cape Cod, please don't hesitate to ask! Of course in June it will be much warmer than it was this particular morning.

The wedding will take place on Sunday, June 27th, at 10:30 in the morning. We are planning on a short, simple ceremony in the garden. A reception, complete with a dinner (your choice of Swordfish or Chicken Oscar), will follow at 6:30 in the evening.

We hope you'll make a vacation out of your trip to cape cod. If you are still looking for a place to stay, there are lots of options. Of course you are welcome to stay at the Dan'l Webster Inn, ($199 and up/Night). There are other bed and breakfasts in the area, and a few hotels. Some of our friends have teamed up to rent a condo, which is also a great idea. Make sure you reserve it far enough in advance. Some condo's want you to reserve it for an entire week. More information at www.weneedavactaion.com.
We found an apartment in Malden right on the orange line (literally, the trains whiz by our window.) It is within our budget, though it is very old (charming!). The neighborhood makes me want to jump up and down, though. We are surrounded by the most beautiful New England houses you can imagine. I love this city so much!

Right now the apartment is looking kinda sparse. We spent the first several nights on the floor without electricity. We now can sleep off the floor, but we haven't invested much in furniture yet. Jobs have to come first. It's both scary and exhilarating how short that is. We can't wait to leave Provo because it means we can be open about our relationship and feel welcome in a new community that is more friendly towards our future family. But it also is scary to be leaving our friends behind and going to a place where we don't know exactly what to expect. Not to mention the fact that I only have a month to throw together a solo exhibition when I haven't even really completed half of the number of pieces that should be in the show!

We'll spend Christmas in Walla Walla, then drive back to Provo to put our boxes into a trailer and head to Chicago for New Years. Then it's off to Boston. We hope to have an apartment by the first two weeks of December, even though we won't be moving in until the first week of January.

Amid the stress of looking for a new home and tying up loose ends here, we are taking time to enjoy ourselves. We find time to cook together and run errands together. And this weekend is a big one for us because Monday is the two year anniversary of our first date.

I think when we leave Provo, the hardest thing to leave behind will be the memories we've made here over the past two years--Wrestling in the leaves, driving up into the mountains, eating at Zupas or Guru's, the places we used to park the car, waking up to snow covered windows, seeing how long we could hold hands in the JFSB elevators before the doors opened, making better and better cheesecakes, doing art projects together, arranging our first home, walking down the river trail to Macey's late at night, stealing irises from BYU flowerbeds in the middle of the night, dancing with our friends at Babylon or Gossip, playing cards or Settler's of Cattan, throwing little dinner parties, or big ones, even just driving around town--I will really miss these things.

Here's to 48 days more here, and a lifetime more elsewhere!
MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-87585607588528951212009-09-27T12:57:00.000-07:002009-09-27T13:11:50.017-07:0050/50/50
Daniel has been crazy busy getting ready for his final show in December. Lately we've spent the weekends on campus - Daniel printing and painting while I work on my novel. Even in all the business, Daniel still found time to get accepted and submit his work to a national art show in Wisconsin. The idea for the show is 50 different types of media from 50 different artists - one from each state. Daniel is representing the state of Utah (which I think is quite funny) with a monotype print. We're both really excited about it! You can take a look at his entry for the show along with the rest of his recent artwork on his website: http://dembree.com/

Michaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14349748492834306114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-76269226003597973692009-09-13T10:59:00.000-07:002009-09-13T11:20:51.917-07:00Save the Date
So we just sent in our down-payment to the Dan'l Webster Inn, officially reserving June 27th for the wedding and reception. :) It's a Sunday, and we're planning on having the ceremony in the morning and the reception in the evening. We recommend making your travel plans as early as possible to get the best deals on airfare and hotels. My mom just found round-trip tickets from Seattle to Boston for $400 total for herself, my dad, and Ryan - that's like $130 per person which is a total steal. You can also consider flying into Providence, RI - it's about the same distance to Sandwich as Boston (an hour, more or less), and from what I've seen the airfare is about the same. We hope that you'll make a vacation out of your visit to New England; there's tons of cool things to do, from Cape Cod beaches to Boston and New York City.

And here's a cool video clip that Daniel found about the state of marriage in Massachusetts:

Michaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14349748492834306114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-29378383379085909802009-08-17T11:49:00.001-07:002009-09-27T12:49:18.808-07:00Mon Essentiel
Our friend Nyles just sent me a link to a slide show created by photographer Margaret Singer. The pictures document a same sex wedding that happened this summer in Massachusetts. I couldn't stop balling as I watched it. It was so beautiful.

I want so badly for our wedding to be like this one. We're planning on a few differences--we want tuxedos and flowers--but at its essentials I want it to be the same. We want to be outside in a beautiful place, in a state that will sanction our marriage. I want to have a simple ceremony where we exchange vows that we have written for each other. And most of all I want to be surrounded by people who love us and who are excited for our marriage.
MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3539715398618185867.post-2477427780168203122009-08-16T12:50:00.000-07:002009-08-16T13:45:29.758-07:00I'm Lucky I'm in Love with my Best Friend

I just got back from the Caribbean a little while ago where I had been on a study abroad, and it is so good to be back. I hadn't seen my mister for 68 days. I don't know how I survived. It was so hard to be apart, especially since we had only been engaged for a month before we had to separate for school.

We started talking about marriage early on--as early as 2 weeks into our relationship. I'm embarrassed to say it was very Mormon of us. In fact, after six months of dating, Michael asked me to marry him on the hill behind his house in Walla Walla. We had climbed up to the top of this hill early in the morning to watch the sunrise. He presented me with a white gold chain, and we have worn matching chains every since.

I used to make fun of the Mormons around us who would get engaged so quickly, but now I understood how they felt! The love I had for Michael was just so strong, and I wanted to be with him forever. Despite that young love, we couldn't get married right away. We had some growing up to do, and our relationship needed time to develop. So instead of making our engagement official, we decided we would wait to declare ourselves engaged until I had proposed to Michael. That way we could both have the experience of proposing.

Like any relationship, we hit rough spots and even separated for a month. But by the time 2009 came around, our relationship was going strong. Michael had moved into my apartment because one of my other roommates had been evicted for "homosexual behavior." (oh the irony!)

In April we got our own place--just the two of us. Instantly I felt our relationship deepen. We were having little dinner parties and double dates. We'd have dinner with Chris and Becky and play Settlers of Catan. Watching the two of them and their daughter interact with each other made me realize how much I wanted to be married and to have a family.

Some nights it was just Michael and me at home playing gin rummy and sipping Michael's fabulous cocktails. Those were some of the best nights of my life. One morning in early May I was taking a shower and thinking about the night before when I realized that this was how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I liked being a couple. I loved Michael as my better half. If I could just play cards with him every night, my life would feel complete. And if I already knew what I wanted, why should I wait to make it happen? So without any plans or anything to give to Michael, I got out of the shower and asked him to marry me right away. He said yes, and we've been making plans every since.

I can't tell you how happy I am to be marrying my best friend on June 27, 2010, after what will be 2 years and 7 months of dating!
MormonRaisedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03756504100827863560noreply@blogger.com1
